A camper needs no prior horsemanship experience for either our standard or extended horsemanship programs. Led by Certified Horsemanship Association certified instructors and trail guides, all campers get a taste of the old west while building communication skills, balance, and personal confidence. Our summer weight loss camp horseback riding program burns lots of calories!
Well trained in first aid, equine and rider management, our empathetic and enthusiastic instructors ensure a safe, fun and challenging experience for every rider.

STANDARD HORSEMANSHIP PROGRAM
Campers choosing this experience will enjoy two, one hour horseback rides per week. Campers will learn basic equitation and how to communicate with a horse through verbal, hand, seat and leg cues. Once you achieve basic riding proficiency, we quickly "hit the trail" to explore the historic and picturesque Orme Ranch. The ranch includes over 26,000 acres of high desert grasslands. That's a lot of spectacular country to see.

Extended Horsemanship Experience
Campers choosing "The Trailboss Program," will take horsemanship to the next level. Campers will learn how to catch, halter, lead, groom, saddle and bridle their horse as well as learn more extensive riding skills. This two hour program runs five days each week and allows the camper to develop a stronger relationship with their mounts while improving their riding skills. Space is very limited for this optional program so register early!

Camp Shane uses the services and facilities of the Orme School and Ranch Camp horsemanship program. Orme has been a leader in equestrian instruction for all levels since 1929. All campers wear approved helmets, utilize well maintained tack and ride under careful supervision (1:4 staff: camper ratio) by qualified and well trained wranglers. All Camp Shane equestrian activities at Orme follow the western riding tradition, utilize western tack and equipment. Our stout and calm trail horses represent some of the best equestrian partners in the business. If you should have any questions or concerns about Camp Shane's riding program at Orme, please call the camp office and we will have you speak to Tim Magill, Horsemanship Director.
